Rev. Barbara A. Allen

Rev. Barbara A. Allen Reverend Barbara A. Allen, age 66, of Manhattan, died February 6, 2011, at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan, Kansas.

She was born October 14, 1944, in Batesville, Indiana, the daughter of the Reverend Roswell Ehme and Else Marie (Andersen) Aden. The daughter of a Lutheran minister, she was born in Indiana, moved to Bluff Springs, Illinois at the age of three, and spent her teenage years in Medford, Wisconsin where she graduated from high school. After high school, Barbara enrolled at Carthage College located in Carthage, Illinois. Two years later, when Barbara was a junior, the college was moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin. It was there that Barbara graduated with a bachelor's degree in Music.

After graduation, Barbara took her first job at a Lutheran church in Lockport, New York. She served as the church organist, choirmaster, and parish assistant. She remained in this job for three years, and then enrolled in seminary at the Yale Divinity School in New Haven, Connecticut where she received a Master of Arts in Religion degree and met her husband, Paul Allen.

Barbara and Paul were married at the Yale Divinity School Chapel. After their wedding, Barbara and Paul moved to Scarsdale, New York to serve in a Baptist church, Paul as the Associate Minister and Barbara as a part-time Christian Education Director. They served in this church for two years before Paul was called to serve as the pastor of the Westview Christian Church in Wilson, North Carolina. Barbara was the organist and held several jobs, including serving as the Chaplain at Atlantic Christian College (now called Barton College). It was during this time that Barbara was ordained (1980), and it is also the place where their son, Paul IV, was born.

In 1985 Barbara's husband Paul was called to minister to the South Central Region in Kansas (Wichita), and Barbara became the pastor at Martinson Avenue Christian Church where she served for 10 years. While serving this church, she also served two terms on the General Board of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and one term on the Administrative Committee. Barbara was also very active in the Regional Board of the Christian Church in Kansas, and served as Moderator of the Region. During this time she also worked part-time for Hospice. A blessing occurred in 1993 when she and Paul adopted a son (Carlos) from Honduras. Carlos graduated from high school in Wichita in 1998, and currently lives in Wichita, and is married with two children.

In 1994, her husband, Paul, passed away. This was a difficult time for the family, but their love for the Lord, and their love for each other sustained them until Barbara was called to serve as the North East Area Minister for the Mid-America (Missouri) Region, based in Columbia, Missouri. She served in this capacity for seven years until her health failed and she joined son, Paul IV and his wife, Patti, and their daughter, Abby in Farmville, North Carolina. There she served as an Elder of First Christian Church in Farmville, NC and a Hospice volunteer. In April of 2010, she moved to Manhattan, Kansas when Paul IV became the senior minister of the First Christian Church.

Barbara was a very active member of First Christian Church, Manhattan, KS. She sang in the Chancel Choir; rang with the Bell Choir; served as a Worship Leader; participated in the Bethany Sunday School Class; attended (and helped) with mid-week Bible studies; was a member of the Worship and Spiritual Life Ministry Team (Spiritual Life sub-team); and she attends the "book study" sessions.
