Dean Coughenour

Dean Coughenour Dean Coughenour, age 83, of Manhattan, Kansas, died Saturday, September 22, 2012, at his residence.

He was born on June 9, 1929, in McPherson, Kansas, the son of Glenn R. and Sarah (Freeburg) Coughenour. Dean was raised in McPherson where he attended local schools, graduating from McPherson High School in 1947. He then attended McPherson College where he studied History and English, graduating with a Bachelors degree in 1951. While in both high school and college Dean enjoyed playing basketball and baseball.

On August 24, 1951, in Waka, Texas, he was united in marriage to the former Verlla Marie Hummer. They moved to Oberlin, Kansas where for the next five years Dean taught English at Oberlin High School and helped officiate at basketball games in the Oberlin area. He then went to work as the managing editor of the Oberlin Herald newspaper for the next two years.

In 1958, they moved to Manhattan where Dean became a partner in the Manhattan Tribune News & Grass and Grain, which became Ag Press. At the time he purchased into the business the firm was located in Aggieville near Kansas State University, eventually moving to their current location on Yuma Street in 1970. Dean was active as owner and manager, retiring from the day to day operation in 1986.

A longtime Manhattan resident, Dean served his community as a City Commissioner from 1973 until 1977, and as Mayor in 1977.

An avid sports fan, Dean especially loved playing tennis. He played daily for more than 40 years originally at the Manhattan Country Club where he was a member and later at the Racquet Club. He also was a baseball enthusiast and enjoyed researching and keeping statistics on players, especially those who played in the 1940's and earlier. Dean was an avid reader and he and Verlla enjoyed traveling.

He is survived by his wife Verlla, of the home. Also surviving are three children: Tim Coughenour, Lawrence, KS; Susan Lundstrom and her husband Greg, Lindsborg, KS; and Evan Coughenour, Manhattan, KS. He is also survived by two grandchildren: Eric Lundstrom and Bebe Lopez and three great grandchildren: Carter and Beckett Lundstrom and Isis Lopez. Also surviving is his brother Bob Coughenour of Lenexa, Kansas and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Dean's Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 27, 2012, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home with Reverend R.C. McConnell officiating. The family will receive friends during a visitation from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
