Donald P. Pickering, Jr.

Donald P. Pickering, Jr. Donald P. “Don” Pickering, Jr., age 65, of Manhattan, Kansas, died Tuesday morning, July 7, 2015, at his residence near Manhattan.

He was born on December 30, 1949, the son of Donald P. and Helen A. (Caldwell) Pickering, Sr.

Mr. Pickering was a longtime Manhattan resident where he was a graduate of the American Institute of Baking’s (now AIB International) resident course, “Baking Science and Technology” in the fall of 1986. He started as an associate instructor at AIB in December of 1987 and was involved in teaching in-store and retail baking technology. In 1996, Don was appointed as Director of European Educational Activities. His responsibilities included several trips to Romania to assist millers in the rebuilding of their industry after the collapse of a repressive government regime. In 2000, he became senior manager of the food labeling department. In this position, he assisted companies in the food industry with regulatory compliance of information on food labels. He presented frequent seminars on the label requirements for FDA regulated foods. During his career at AIB he traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad. He retired in July of 2010.

He is survived by his sister: Theresa Marie Albrecht, of Manhattan and by his niece: Shawn Michelle Martinez.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation has taken place. Committal services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 1, 2015, at the First Presbyterian Church Friendship Park Columbarium, 801 Leavenworth Street, Manhattan, Kansas. Reverend R.C. McConnell will be officiating.
